Biography / profile
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. He attended school with his older sister, Sarah. in 1816 Abraham‘s friend saved him from drowning. Later in the year, the Lincoln family moved to southern Indiana and they settled near present-day Gentryville.
Lincoln’s mother died in 1818. A year later, his father wedded Sarah Bush Johnston.
Lincoln casted his first ballot on August 1, 1831 and in 1834, he was elected at the Illinois State Legislature. In 1835, Lincoln resumed his legal studies with great determination while the state legislature was adjourned in the month of February.
In 1839, Lincoln met Mary Ann Todd. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln was elected at the Illinois House of Representatives for his 4th and last time. In 1842 on November 4, Lincoln married Mary Todd. They had four children
Lincoln was elected to the United States of Representatives on August 3rd, 1846 and spoke out against the Mexican War.
In1849 on March 4th Lincoln was admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court.
1854 Lincoln became a candidate for the United States Senate. In 1856, Abraham Lincoln organized the new Republican Party in Illinois.
In November 1860, Lincoln became the 16th President of United States and on March 4th, 1861, Abraham Lincoln was sworn in.
On September 22nd, 1862, he proclaimed the Preliminary Emancipation, which became in effect on January 1863. Lincoln created Thanksgiving Day on October 3rd, 1863. On November 19th, 1863, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address and dedicated the battleground to the military personnel who had been killed.
On March 4th, 1865, Lincoln became President for the second time.
On April 11th, 1865, Lincoln spoke publicly for the last time. Three days later, J. Booth shot Lincoln who died the next morning. On May 4th, 1865, Lincoln was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
